Protecting Our Young People from Money Laundering Scams |

Good morning Resident,
You are receiving this alert because either you have completed a survey and selected cyber crime and fraud as a concern, or because we believe you will benefit from this information due to your age (16-24).
Recent findings show that 3 out of 5 university students are approached to launder money before they have even sat in their first lecture. Alarmingly, many students do not realise they are being targeted. What appears to be a simple job opportunity advertised on social media can, in reality, be a serious criminal scheme.
As the new academic year approaches, many young people in our community are preparing to begin university life. This is an exciting time - but unfortunately, it is also when criminals are most active in targeting students.
How the Scam Works Criminals often post adverts offering “easy money” for minimal work - sometimes described as “money transfer agents” or “payment assistants.” Students may be asked to receive funds into their personal bank account and transfer them elsewhere, often with the promise of keeping a small commission.
However, this activity is money laundering - the process of moving money obtained through crime (such as fraud or theft) to make it appear legitimate. Even if someone doesn’t fully realise what they are participating in, they can still be held legally responsible.
